In early September, the subcommittee of the local planning and building committee in Netanya decided to deposit (publish for public review and objections) five urban renewal plans, subject to conditions. Together they include about 1,300 new apartments, in place of hundreds of older apartments that will be demolished.

In the city center, in the Dizengoff and Shtemfer compound, about 300 apartments are planned in place of 102, in two towers of 20 to 35 floors on a shared four-floor base, and one building in the compound will be preserved. In Kiryat Nordau, in the Shitrit compound, 84 apartments will be replaced by 320 new apartments, in four buildings of 10, 27 and 30 floors, with a commercial frontage and public spaces.

In brief
  • Five plans approved for deposit, with conditions, in early September
  • About 1,300 new apartments in the city center, Kiryat Nordau and Neot Shaked
  • The Sharon Cinema building will be preserved for cultural and commercial uses

In the Neot Shaked neighborhood, two towers of 30 and 35 floors with 315 apartments are planned, in place of 80 apartments in two railway-style apartment blocks (binyanei rakevet). The height of the towers is subject to approval by the Civil Aviation Authority. On Binyamin Boulevard and Brodetsky Street, a 31-floor tower and two 17-floor buildings will be built, with 240 apartments in place of 75, as well as a public parking lot with fees.

The fifth plan is the Sharon Cinema compound in the city center, near Smilansky and Sha'ar HaGai streets. In place of about 62 apartments, a mixed-use tower of 35 floors with 130 apartments will be built, and the cinema building will be preserved for cultural, commercial and employment uses.

The head of the municipality's Urban Renewal Administration said that urban renewal is not only the replacement of old buildings with new ones. Mayor Avi Salama said it is an opportunity to renew the older neighborhoods and improve residents' lives.
